Synopsis: Life Itself centers on a couple (Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde) which leads a multi-generational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event.
My Thoughts & Recommendation: I absolutely loved this film because it involved the real things people go through in their lives. Now, the way the stories relate and how they somehow come together, that is a little far-fetched, but then again, my family has similar connections, so maybe it’s not all that implausible. But there are true themes in this movie, such as love, death, and grief. I will say I thought the beginning of the movie was weird and wondered, “What in the world??? What is this movie even about?” but that whole bit is explained in the 20 minutes after that initial scene with Samuel L. Jackson. The movie was sweet and heart-wrenching at the same time. You’ll want to scream at the character and root for them. If you cry easily, you’re going to want to bring tissues. I don’t, but even I got a little teary-eyed. The movie may be a little slow at times, but it only adds to the story in hindsight. There is some foul language, but not too much apart from Oscar Isaac’s and Olivia Wilde’s characters. There are also a few references thanks to Oscar Isaac’s character. I would definitely recommend anybody who loves indie films and the show This Is Us (same producers) to go see it, and even if you don’t, I think you’d still like it if you give it a chance. However, if you absolutely hate the song Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan, I would not recommend you see this movie because it plays a few times throughout. But who doesn’t like that song?
My Rating: 5/5
