Synopsis: Ten-year-old Lewis goes to live with his oddball uncle in a creaky old house that contains a mysterious ticktock noise. He soon learns that Uncle Jonathan and his feisty neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman, are powerful practitioners of the magic arts. When Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, the town’s sleepy facade suddenly springs to life — revealing a secret and dangerous world of witches, warlocks and deadly curses.
My Thoughts & Recommendation: I was actually quite disappointed by this film. I was expecting a movie similar to that of Goosebumps with more action and adventure, but it was just sort of weird. And I mostly mean weird in the way that kids will think is hilarious. There were also a couple things that were a little disturbing, like the walking dolls and a baby Jack Black. I would also say that there is a fair bit of over acting, especially by the kid when he cries (it’s awful). But I will say the redeeming quality of the movie is the undertone of family and friendships. That was really sweet to watch and I really felt for the kid and the neighbor (Mrs. Zimmerman) for their losses. I also really liked the Mrs. Zimmerman character. Would I recommend this for adults by themselves? No; not unless you like nonsensical things that kids like. But I would definitely recommend this for kids because it has a lot of that weird kid humor and logic.
P.S. – I have not read the book, so I do not know how it compares.
My Rating: 2.5/5
