Trailer:
Synopsis: High school senior Lily and her three best friends live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies and chats — just like the rest of the world. Their small town gets turned upside down when an anonymous hacker starts to reveal personal messages and secrets of thousands of people. As anger erupts into full-blown violence, the four girls soon find themselves in a fight for their lives against an armed mob.
My Thoughts & Recommendation: To start off, I will tell you I had not read the synopsis nor watched any of the trailers before seeing the movie. I went in totally blind as to what the movie was about. I will say, it is rated R for a reason. And it warns you of the reason why with short snippets from the movie to accompany that. There is an undertone of sex because it revolves around 4 young adults who live in a world of social media, gossip, and parties. And, also, because with the hackings, sex scandals are revealed. Because of the number of private lives revealed, the town of Salem goes crazy, and I mean that quite literally. There is a large group, dare I say mob, that goes around not only terrorizing people for their misdeeds. “Misdeeds” is a loaded word because it implies that someone did something wrong. Some of the people being harassed or assaulted by this mob are deemed sluts and whores, but that is not inherently wrong. The mob doing this is running on a moral code that does not align with that of the law. Basically, the whole town goes bonkers over this group of four friends because some other kid wrongly identified one of the girls as the hacker. There is lots of blood and murder at this point and its actually kind of epic in like a Die Hard kind of way, though there is so much more blood in this movie (think Carrie). If I had to sum this movie up in its entirety, I would describe it as the Salem Witch trials but set in today’s age of technology and social media. I feel like that is what they were going for since the movie does take place in Salem. If you like action/mystery/thriller type of movies with a bit of blood and gore, I’d recommend this movie. I was surprised how much I liked it. Or maybe I’m not surprised because I do like the feminist, female power turn it took near the end.
My Rating: 3.5/5
