Synopsis: After moving to Paris, author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette agrees to ghostwrite a semi-autobiographical novel for her husband. Its success soon inspires her to fight for creative ownership and overcome the societal constraints of the early 20th century.
My Thoughts & Recommendation: I was much impressed by this film. I knew it was about a woman who marries a man who asks her to ghostwrite a story for him and then proceeds to take all credit and ownership of it, but the background of the stories are so fascinating and intertwined with their personal lives that its no wonder Colette has many fights with her husband over said stories. There is so much at the root of this movie: intellectual property, women’s role in society, LGBT themes, misogyny, infidelity, and double standards. This movie was gripping from the end of the first scene (which is there pretty much just for background of the characters) to the last. There isn’t much I didn’t like about the movie, except Colette’s husband, but we are supposed to hate the character, in which they did a good job in the storytelling to do that. Love it! It gets a bit steamy at times and shows a handful of characters in compromising positions, but if you can handle that kind of stuff, go see this film. It is truly a work of art.
My Rating: 5/5
