Synopsis: On the heels of their six-time Academy Award®-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

My Thoughts & Recommendation: If you are unfamiliar with all the events leading up to the launch of Apollo 11, this movie will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering who is going to get hurt – possibly killed – and when. From history, we know that Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon, but his journey is quite a story. His personal life even more so. It made me question the sanity of Armstrong at times, but in the end, those are the things that made him able to do what he did on July 20th, 1969. And his co-star Claire Foy played the strong character of Janet Armstrong wonderfully. Her eyes tell so much of her story. The thing I really did not like about this film was the fast motion in parts of it. In both Armstrong’s training and when he is actually in space, there’s a lot of fast motion which made my stomach churn from motion sickness. But, the film is a good in-depth look into the kind of astronaut, coworker, and father he was. I would recommend this for people who like historical movies or space movies; just be wary of motion sickness.

My Rating: 4/5
