Trailer:

Synopsis: Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds — the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what’s right.

My Thoughts & Recommendation: I have never seen a more socially-relevant movie than this one. It really gives you all the sides and perspectives of an event like that of Starr’s friend. It shows the sociological and psychological impacts of this from Starr’s point of view which is refreshing and eye-opening. As someone who is multi-racial, I could relate to Starr’s life in that I, too, find myself putting forth different sides of myself depending on who I am around. This movie is one that will move you and make you check your privileges, and even offer promises and a look towards solutions to social injustice. I would recommend this movie to anybody over the age of 12 because it is just so relevant, but also beautifully told.

My Rating: 5/5
